Rules of the Oti Tahiti Competition

Dance
× Dancers may be from halau, studio, organization or independent
× No limit on entries per group
× Age verification based on your honor
× Eliminations pending
× 2 minute maximum
× 1 to 3 dancers competing at once
× Must incorporate at least 5 basic dance steps
× Must have an entrance/start and exit/end
× Must make full use of the dance area
Costume
× Traditional pareu required- rayon allowed, rolls allowed
× No ruffles, no visual pareu ties
× No hand held items, no hei tino
× Arm bands are allowed, nothing longer than 3” (Exception: Tane leggings)
× Pareu must be no shorter than 5” above the knee, no longer than knee length
× No glue, paste, staples, etc.
× Accessories must be made from natural items such as: shells, feathers, flowers, leaves, fabric, mo’re, raffia, etc. No imitations (silks, plastics, etc.)
Colors:
× Purple represents death in Tahiti. This color is not always welcome.
× It is difficult to see the movement of a dancer wearing a black pareu, possibly making it difficult to judge
Although these colors are not encourage and the judge may score you less, there is no point deduction for
wearing black or purple pareus
Automatic Deductions from Overall Score
× 5 points automatic deduction for NOT smiling
× 5 points automatic deduction for falling head piece, pareu or any part of costume (exception leaves and petals)
× 5 points automatic deduction for each broken rule
Dressing Room Courtesy
× Assigned areas only
× Absolutely no guests in the dressing area
× Each group is allowed 2 helpers only, independent dancers allowed 1 helper
× This is a family affair…. No drugs, no alcohol, no offensive language
× Proper disposal of leaves, flowers etc.
× Leave your area neat and clean for the next dancer
